5 Tips for Easing Joint Pain in Cold Weather

  1. Stay Active

It’s critical to keep your body active regardless the time of year. During the cold months we can feel less motivated and more inclined to stay home or are busy with other stuff. Low impact movements will keep your joints healthy. Some good options are indoor swimming, stretching, walking, and resistance training. We can assist in determining the best activity for you.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is harder in the winter months for everyone. The winter months are more dry which effects your entire body including your joints. If drinking cold water is challenging in the winter, sip a cup of warm tea or hot water with lemon. Soup is also a hydrating option. Aim for about eight glasses of water per day, especially if you are staying active or working out.

  1. Be mindful of your diet

A balanced diet is essential all the time. A well-balanced diet will keep your body healthy, helping you avoid getting run down and help with illness. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Avoid processed and sugary foods. Its hard at the holidays but its best to balance your diet to keep you feeling your best.

  1. Bundle up

Wear plenty of layers and keep yourself warm. Keep gloves or mittens in your car. Cold fingers and toes tend to ache and feel sore, whether joint pain is something you struggle with or not. Warm clothing will help you feel more comfortable going outside, getting fresh air and exercise.

  1. Maintain your weight

A small amount of excess weight will start to affect your knees and other joints. Try to log your food intake as a way to manage what you are eating over the holiday season. Its helpful to maintain a balanced diet and your weight to avoid added strain on your joints.
